Cheap & Easy Updates to Your Beauty Routine – Special Guest Post!

I am so excited to share a post with you all today from one of my bloggy BFFs, Cari. Today, Cari is sharing some fun, affordable beauty tips with us. Enjoy!

When Kristin asked me to guest post for her, I was giddy with excitement, did a little dance, and ran to tell my husband. As soon as the excitement stopped bubbling out of me, I knew exactly what I wanted to write. I am going on 30 and have spent very few days without makeup on. It is just something I do, it is part of who I am. It is not that I feel like I am not pretty without it, I am just more “old school” with my appearances. I long for the days when ladies wore hats and gloves, tied their hair in scarfs, and everyone took pride in themselves. I know that makeup every day is not for everyone, but I still believe that taking pride in your appearance, no matter how you do it, is vital to success. If you do not take yourself seriously, then how can you expect anyone else to?

That is my soapbox, and maybe Kristin will have me back one day to talk about that, but for today, I want to share some beauty secrets I have learned over my fabulous life.

DIY Hair Detangler

Homemade Hair Detangler

I have very thick, coarse hair that is constantly getting tangled. I condition regularly, use masques, and spray leave-in conditioner.  I now make my own because I could only find the kid versions for the longest time, and those just did not cut it.

What you’ll need:
1.       Spray bottle (repurpose from other styling product or purchase one cheaply)
2.       Conditioner (this is a great way to use those samples)
3.       Frizz Control/ Smoothing Crème
4.       Water

Add 1 teaspoon of conditioner and 1 teaspoon of frizz control cream. (I actually double this because my hair is so thick and coarse.) Fill the bottle the rest of the way with water. Shake vigorously until it mixes well. It is best to shake before each use.

I keep one of these in my beach bag, a small one in my big purse, and one at home. If I went to the gym, I would even keep one in my gym bag.

Here are a few more tips to make your beauty routine quicker and easier:

  • Dry curly or coarse hair with a t-shirt (or baby towel) instead of your normal bath towel to help cut down on frizz. Be sure to not rub it around your head, this will just add to the tangles and frizz.
  • If you get mascara or liquid liner on your skin (it happens to us all!)  let it completely dry, and it will flake right off.
  • Rub Vaseline instead of lotion on your elbows and knees to soften cracked skin.
  • Use a metal art pencil sharpener for eyeliner and lip liner. They are designed to work with all hardnesses of pencils, so they sharpen better, do not crack the wood, and give a finer point to work with.
  • Use baby oil gel instead of pricey eye makeup remover. Simply squeeze some on a cotton ball and swipe slowly across your eyelid. It is amazing; it even works for heavy eye makeup.
  • Spray lemon juice on your hair (as you would Sun-In) before you go into the sun to bring out your natural highlights.
  • My lovely Mother-In-Law wanted to share her best tip too - use Noxzema instead of shaving cream. Your legs will be smoother and will not get razor burn. I am so glad she shared this tip with me; I love it!

I Finally Gave in…to Birchbox. And I’m Glad I Did!

I love beauty items! I can spend hours (and hundreds of dollars) in Sephora or Ulta every week if I give myself the opportunity. I’m trying to be a little more practical in my spending and also trying to keep the clutter at bay, and my beauty habit was not helping either of those causes.

Low and behold, I was the last person in the world (I think) to join Birchbox. I went back and forth on whether it was worth it for awhile.

My Reasons NOT To Join Birchbox

  • I only control what I’ll receive to a certain extent by setting up my profile.
  • I can get samples for free from stores like Nordstrom and Macy’s.
  • I’m always hesitant to sign up for anything that automatically renews every month.
  • More beauty products coming into the house means more clutter.

Why I Ultimately Decided to Join Birchbox

  • I can’t control what I’ll receive, which will encourage me to try new brands that may be better, more affordable or both without investing a ton of money if they’re not.
  • I don’t have to deal with driving to the mall, pushy sales people, or mall crowds.
  • Using samples to see what I like will ultimately reduce the clutter of full-size products that don’t work but I don’t want to toss because I paid for them.
  • It’s like a little gift/treat/surprise just for me arriving in the mail each month!

My first month (July) arrived the other day.

Pink Birchbox

I had heard that other people loved their boxes, but had never really heard details on what exactly was in them.

July's Birchbox with Glamour

Glamour magazine was a partner for this month’s box…I’m not sure if each month has a different sponsor or how that typically works!

July Birchbox All Wrapped Up

I was surprised that the box not only included cosmetics, but also bright pink and blue headphones (perfect for the gym!) and an Uber Lara Bar.
Mid-day snacking just got a lot less guilt-ridden thanks to LÄRABAR®’s addictive treats. These healthy bars fulfill sweet and salty cravings while keeping our tummies full (and extremely happy) until our next meal. Each soft, gooey bar packs plenty of texture and flavor, thanks to nuts, dried fruit, and other natural ingredients. Roasted Nut Roll is a decadent blend of crunchy nuts, while the dessert-inspired Apple Turnover, Bananas Foster, and Cherry Cobbler flavors evoke Grandma’s recipes. But being the beauty addict that I am, I quickly dug into the little green wrapped package to find more goodies.

July's Birchbox Goodies

Overall, I was pretty happy with my goodies for July.

I love the Balm, so I was excited to try the Stainiac, one of their products I had always been nervous to try.
You wouldn’t know it from the state of our makeup drawer, but we’re actually beauty minimalists. Our motto: Why use two products when you can get the same effect with one? This two-in-one lip and cheek stain gives us a natural, understated flush and helps us get out the door faster. The gel formula looks dark in the tube but delivers a sheer tint. It comes in three shades that complement all skin tones: Beauty Queen is a magenta-toned pink, Prom Queen is a lovely rose pink, and Homecoming Queen is a dewy peach.

The Jouer lip enhancer wasn’t necessarily exciting, but really useful.
When we discovered Jouer, this miraculous balm is the first product we fell in love with — and our affair is going strong. It’s no surprise that we always have a tube of this on hand: it’s deeply moisturizing, smells amazing, and delivers the prettiest hint of sheer pink color. The best part? It minimizes the appearance of fine lines and boosts your lips naturally without that annoying tingly sensation found in so many other plumpers.

The Ada Cosmetics peach bronzer looked great on and was a surprisingly good price when I went to the online shop.
In our efforts to get a beachy glow, we’ve tried various head-to-toe methods: from wearing too-dark foundation to baking under the sun. Now we rely on this natural mineral bronzing powder. Free of skin-irritating ingredients like talc, it adds streak-free warmth to our complexions year-round. It can be applied all over or used to define cheekbones and brow bones. Dust a bit on your décolleté and shoulders to offset strappy sundresses.

My favorite pick of the July box was the Hello perfume by Harvey Prince.
Allow us to introduce you to your new warm weather scent. For their latest fragrance, the brother duo behind Harvey Prince decided to mimic the joy of waking up to a warm day with the sun shining and the flowers blooming. The resulting blend is an energizing mix of citrus and floral notes that will keep you optimistic even when you get up on the wrong side of the bed.

Not bad for $10 bucks.

The other benefits are that you can shop your box online and get full size products, many of which had free shipping for me this month. Anything that saves me time and an extra trip to the store is a plus in my book, no matter how much I like wandering up and down all those cosmetic aisles. You can also earn Birchbox points to get discounts on your favorite products!

If you too want to jump on the Birchbox bandwagon, you can do so here. I’d also love to hear feedback from Birchbox subscribers that have been signed up for months!

You Can Have Healthy Hands and Nails This Winter!

Custom Nail Solutions Nail Expert Katie Saxton has Strengthening and Conditioning Tips to Freshen up your Nails During the Cold Months

Winter weather is tough to endure, especially for our hands and nails. With the cold and dry temps ever-so-present, treat your extremities to some pampering with these health tips provided by Katie Saxton from Custom Nail Solutions! If your skin is dry and your nails are chipping easier than ever, see below for her advice on how to restore your winter-beaten hands and nails. Custom Nail Solutions has embraced the latest movement of personalized nails, allowing clients build their own nail kits that only fit their nail beds and customized to their liking. The kits are built out of indestructible thermo-plastic and guaranteed to never break, chip, crack or change shape. What a perfect solution for winter weather!

Try these easy steps to keep your hands and nails healthy with cold conditions.

DIET RIGHT:

  • Take in calcium, iron, protein, and vitamins A, B, C and D and your nails will gradually grow stronger and healthier.
  • Eat the right foods. Try fish, chicken, eggs, cheese, milk and plenty of fruits and vegetables. These are also great foods to keep you healthy overall!
  • Take in a lot of biotin.

CONSISTENT NAIL MAINTENANCE:

  • Scheduling regular manicures is crucial during the winter months if you want healthy nails. You can schedule in-salon manicures, or do them at home. Both work as long as you are doing them regularly.
  • File, buff and massage the nails. Purchase a buffer, and start at the cuticle and move forward to buff the entire nail bed. The buff will keep your nails from cracking.

PROTECT YOUR NAILS:

  • Nail strengtheners and hardeners. Think of it as conditioner for your hair. It cuts down on nail chipping most of all!
  • Cuticle care. If you don’t want to spend money on name brand cuticle products, you can also use olive oil right from your kitchen! Whatever you decide, leave it on for five minutes to fully replenish your nails. Don’t wash your hands completely, allowing your nails to get the richest conditioning possible.
  • Use lotions to keep your hands moisturized. During the winter months, hands become dryer than we’d like. Use a few times a day and you’ll feel the difference.
  • Refuse the urge to bite your nails.
  • Don’t use your nails to pry open jars; find the right tool instead.

How to be Fabulously Pampered on a Budget

Part of being fabulous is feeling posh and pampered, but there’s nothing beautiful about breaking the bank to do so. I’ve loved the luxury of a weekly blow out since I was a teenager, and if I could, manicures, pedicures, waxing, spray tans and a blow dry would be a weekly occurrence. I guess facials could be monthly.

Like everyone else, I’m on a tight budget with a mortgage and car payment that come before beauty splurges. I’ve heard all the DIY tips before, but at an home spa day is not at all relaxing to me. I don’t need to do yoga to try to paint my toe nails, and by the time I’ve finished my blow out, I’m sweating from the work and my hair is starting to frizz! So what’s a fabulous and frugal girl to do?

Cosmetology Schools
I really miss my weekly gossip sessions with my hair stylist, but now I save trips to the salon for cut and complicated color. For everything else, including my weekly style, I pop into my local beauty school.  I save around $100 a month on that alone, and you can save even more by getting your cut and color done there too.

The schools not only offer hair services, but many also offer facial waxing and nails. Some even offer facials! Imagine how much you’d save on skin care products with a monthly facial at around $10.

Massage Clubs
If you’re lucky, there’s also a massage school in your area that offers discounted student massages and you can treat yourself for next to nothing. If not, monthly massage clubs are popping up all over the place with affordable memberships. My local one is Massage Envy, but there are others nationwide.  Their offerings aren’t quite as varied and their environment not quite as luxurious as a pricey spa, but they are usually clean, friendly, relaxing, and have far better hours and convenient locations near your other errands.

Weekday Nail Appointments
I’ve found my local nail places offer fantastic prices during off-peak weekdays.  You’ll skip the evening and weekend rush, and get a bargain on a manicure/pedicure combo or be able to get a reduced price on extras like nail designs or waxing.

Drug Store Goodies
I know it doesn’t quite fit in with the rest, but lipgloss is the ultimate quick pick me up that you can use any time, any where. Yes, Chanel lip gloss is the best, but since I can’t afford a tube of that a week, I tried several drug store brands to see if any compared. You want baby soft lips with shimmer, shine and a tint of color, minus the tacky, sticky mess that your hair sticks to. I found it, for around $3 bucks at Wal-Mart of all places! Bonne Bell has grown up from the Dr. Pepper Lip Smackers you loved as a kid to the Lip Lites Lip Gloss. My two personal favorites are Cappucino and Metallic Mocha.

I’ve been hard pressed to find an affordable spray tan alternative, and when I tried to spray myself at home it was a disaster for both me and my floor. However, I am in love with the Jergens Daily Glow. It’s under $10, gradually builds and doesn’t turn you into an orange mess. One word of caution – you have to be consistent or you won’t see results. This is one that can be very pampering at home. Get in tune with your body, relax, and turn it into a part of your self care ritual. Bonne Bell also offers a Bronze Gel that gives your face a fantastic instant glow.

If you have a high threshold for self-inflicted pain, you can try the Sally Hansen at home wax warmer. There are versions for both face and body, although I can’t bring myself to do anything other than the briefest facial areas. You do have to remember to warm it up about half an hour before you’re ready to use it. I’ve found that the kit with strips works better than the one without; its easier to use and leaves a cleaner finish.

What frugal pampering tips do you use to get fabulous on a budget?
